Kiki and the Statue of Liberty“Kiki and the Statue of Liberty” continues the story of Kiki and her family (“Kiki and the Red Shoes”) as they leave Athens, Greece and board the ship, the Nea Hellas, for the 14 day voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to America. The whimsical illustration of artist, Sandy Branam, compliment the adventures of Kiki and her brother, Yannie. During the trip, Yannie climbs up a pole and rings the alarm which frightens the passengers and earns him a scolding from the ship’s Captain and Mama. Kiki loves to watch the waves rolling in the ocean outside her cabin window, but isn’t happy when the same rolling feeling is in her tummy. Kiki worries that her family won’t be accepted in the new country, but overcomes her anxiety when the Statue of Liberty welcomes them to America and sees Papa waiting for them at the dock in New York Harbor Have you read this book? Kiki and the Red ShoesThe year is 1939. Six-year old Kiki lives in Athens, Greece with her mother and little brother. A special gift from her aunt in America plays an important role in Kiki’s school program. The story, written by Bess Chappas, along with engaging pastel illustrations, by Sandy Branam, is one children and adults will enjoy. A read-along CD by the author accompanies the book. “Bess, I really enjoyed your book. I found it. It reminded me somewhat of my own upbringing as a Lebanese child in a MS Delta community. We weren’t always like all the other kids! I loved hearing about how you came here to America and the story of the red shoes; very well written. Adults would enjoy it just as much as kids. I was fortunate enough to have also seen your brother’s very coat that you saved over all these years! And what a great cover illustration! Looking forward to your next book. I think it’s just the thing kids today need to hear.” - B.J. Abraham Heartwarming story with expressive illustrations, Kiki’s story teaches that perceived problem can become opportunities. The added value of the CD makes this a great buy. - E. Michaels Have you read this book? Please leave a review here. |
